Green Boat
The Laughing Gull is a “green” boat. Well of course she is, as you can see in the photo a prettier shade of green would be hard to find. In this context however we’re talking about the design and operation of the boat and the business to be environmentally and socially sustainable. Let’s start with the boat.
Laughing Gull is a traditional downeast hull design which has been the choice of the Maine Lobsterman for nearly 100 years. The combination of seaworthiness, safety, comfort, and fuel efficiency are legendary. Laughing Gull is best described as a 24' lobster yacht and was specifically built for service as a tour boat. Through the use of modern construction techniques and materials she is both lighter and stronger than traditionally constructed boats. She is powered by a modern four stroke outboard designed to minimize emissions and maximize fuel economy. This light weight and increased strength allows her to be trailered with a 6 cylinder pickup truck. By trailering her we’re able to serve ports along Maine’s midcoast and avoid the use of environmentally questionable bottom paint.
We embrace the Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics and adhere to the relevant principles. This involves such actions as respecting wildlife by watching from an appropriate distance (we have plenty of binoculars to share!), being considerate of other folks working or playing on the water, and of course proper disposal of all wastes.
We support conservation. We have very rewarding previous careers in conservation and the lessons and philosophy have followed us into business. On a more mercenary note, our business is entirely dependent on continuing to have this beautiful, healthy coastal ecosystem in which to conduct our tours so we’re doubly motivated. We serve as members and active volunteers in and give to a number of coastal conservation and recreation organizations. We donate or offer deep discounts on trips aboard the Laughing Gull as fund raisers for these organizations. We’re glad to share what we have learned about the natural and cultural history of the tour route.
